Year of the Flood
The Nightmare Scenario The charges of Atwood in the novel ââ¬Å"Year of the Floodâ⬠are based off her idea that never throughout the entire existence of creation has an animal types had the way to its own mass eradication that it actually included it inside its very fingertips.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Year of the Flood explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is thought is obviously roused from the possibly dangerous powers of atomic holocausts, unmitigated hereditary designing and an undeniably disruptive society where the potential for class fighting is a developing worry as observed by the ongoing uprisings in the Middle East. For Atwood, her annihilation of decision is passing by plague wherein humankind is cleared out by a plague that was at first masked as a prophylactic. While the Geneva Convention on Human Rights has restricted the utilization and advancement of organic operators as a methods for fighting, accordingly saving humankind the chance of biting the dust because of a destructive illness, the reality remains that reviews despite everything do proceed in the domain of hereditary building wherein the mysteries of the hereditary code are constantly being investigated by researchers. For Atwood the structure of our way of life including sciences, religion and individuals are naturally defective and deprived for change. The present standard in the public arena is in the encouraging of the idea of social imbalance which can and will make issues later on comparable to participation between all areas of humankind (Brooks, 11). It is because of this that Atwood depicts the future in such a dystopic group since it is really a sufficient impression of what the world will resemble should nothing be finished. Corresponding to the study of hereditary designing, it has had the option to make bioengineered corn that is increasingly impervious to ailment, made viable methods for treatment through hormones and q uality treatment, all while the study of hereditary building is still inside its early stages. Then again different negative results have likewise come about, for example, bioengineered crops that people are really adversely affected by and untold symptoms on the human body by the present horde of medications and vaccinations created by pharmaceutical organizations. While impossible, the chance is still there for fiasco to happen; one proclamation by Atwood in the book sums up this chance ââ¬Å"this was not a standard pandemic it wouldnââ¬â¢t be contained after a couple hundred thousand passings, the demolished with bio-devices and dye, this was the Waterless Flood the Gardeners so regularly had cautioned about, it had all the signs: it went through the air as though on wings, it consumed the urban communities like fire, spreading germ-ridden hordes, dread, and butcheryâ⬠(Atwood, 20). This specific statement from the book shows how an organic virus can move through society ; unhindered, relentless and un-killable.Advertising Looking for article on writing dialects? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The point that Atwood is attempting to make in this specific occasion is that with each progression we take towards logical advancement is a potential advance towards human annihilation. On account of the activities of Craker she apparently places that if progress isnââ¬â¢t tempered with adequate mental backbone and care the outcome could be tragic. With the end goal for mankind to show up at level appeared in ââ¬Å"Year of the Floodâ⬠current patterns and practices donââ¬â¢t should be overstated rather letting them finish on their present game-plan will definitely prompt the current dystopic future appeared in the novel (Snyder, 19). Effectively unmitigated poisons being discharged into the climate have released all way of infections for humankind, the proceeded with development of the hole among rich and poor will definitely arrive at a breaking point and disorderly hereditary investigations done for the sake of science can and will release some type of hereditary variation onto the world that will make life progressively hard for mankind (Brooks, 15). The inescapable bad dream situation needn't bother with any further impetus nor embellishment with the goal for it to happen, rather, inaction by government pioneers, networks and researchers will realize it somehow. Negative Thinking After a snapshot of self-contemplation I would need to state that I would group myself just like a for the most part cynical scholar. While I donââ¬â¢t circumvent taking a gander at the conceivable negative ramifications of the different activities mankind has submitted I am not all that gullible as to expect that valid and positive change won't come without some type of force activating it. For instance right now districts, for example, the U.A.E, Australia and China have been executi ng progressively rigid techniques for web oversight so as to keep the overall population from ââ¬Å"being harmedâ⬠by different antigovernment purposeful publicity as of now multiplying the web at the present time. What must be seen however is that the web is perhaps the best device today for social and political change as found in the ongoing uprisings in the Middle East. One scene from the novel really shows the certainty of such an activity â⬠then the CorpSeCorps had banned guns in light of a legitimate concern for open security, saving the recently created splash firearms for themselves, and out of nowhere individuals were formally weaponlessâ⬠(Atwood, 24).Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Year of the Flood explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More With the advancement of the web as a genuine instrument of social change and change it shocks no one that legislatures would then advance in to control it similarly as the CorpSeCrops st epped in as referenced in the novel with the end goal of ââ¬Å"public securityâ⬠. As such dependent on what can be found in the present with respect to progressively severe government authority over the lives of their residents one can't resist the opportunity to stay critical as the very devices residents can use to retaliate are gradually being detracted from them. Humankind and machines Generally, the basic role of machines has consistently been to make human lives simpler. Truth be told their advantages have been referenced in the book in the accompanying entry ââ¬Å"The food came in through the wellbeing fixed portal, in addition to there was the minifridge with snacks, and the water was sifted, coming in and out bothâ⬠(Atwood, 7). As such it very well may be seen that it is even in the assessment of Atwood that as machines show signs of improvement in giving human needs so to does the chance of the personal satisfaction increment. Then again it can likewise be exp ressed that as machines keep on developing so to will the employments recently done by people be eliminated for cold machine effectiveness. Indeed it can even be seen in different segments of the book where the expanded detachment of the informed portion of the populace in the situations gave by the organizations is because of the way that an expanding measure of human employments being re-appropriated to robots which cause a huge level of the populace to live in destitution. All things considered, while it very well may be said that while machines improve the nature of human life will expand this level of value will be progressively disconnected towards the more elite classes of society. Changing Along With Machines One of the messages Atwood attempts to bestow in the novel is the idea of kinship anyway this idea can be further deciphered as thinking about your individual man. What must be mulled over is the way that alongside upgrades in machines humankind should likewise improve alongside them. This doesn't mean the advancement of the physical self but instead the development of thought wherein mankind builds up an adequate enough ability to comprehend that its proceeded with activities will hurt as opposed to help humankind all in all. All things considered, this implies growing new cultural structures that encourage uniformity as opposed to disparity, better social standards that attention on ethics and morals lastly the advancement of oneself to incorporate both an affection forever and the longing to secure it. Its Nice to Meet You
Itâs Nice to Meet You When I introduce myself in new groups, a lot of times I bring that up how I inline skate, or rollerblade. Even after three years of being in the inline skate community, one of my first images of a ârollerbladerâ is this: 2nd photo on Google Images But for me, inline skating looks like this: yes those are sparks I didnât start skating until I got to MIT my freshman year. I got a pair for $25 with kneepads, elbowpads, and wristguards at Goodwill. I had always wanted to learn, but living near hills made it too intimidating to learn. The area around MIT seemed very friendly and flat with bike lanes. My first attempt ended with me moving 5 ft forward in the East Campus courtyard, scared out of my mind, hitting a sidewalk crack and falling straight to my knees. I put the skates away in my closet like many one-time hobbies. I definitely could have just ended it there saying, âRollerblading isnât for me, I have no balanceâ. But I tried again. And Iâm really glad I did. I asked a friend who also skated at MIT to teach me how to step over cracks and brake. Then I started skating around campus, to class. I would take them out at 3am and skate my PNR emotional frustrations away. The feeling of racing down Mass Ave, gliding from one foot to another, is an amazing adrenaline rush. Being able to make meetings or classes across campus in minutes and get more sleep? Even better. Getting Out of the MIT Bubble On a summer trip to explore Chicago, I coincidentally hit Skate Chicago, an annual weekend of inline skating across the city. I made friends from all over the U.S, and from them learned about other annual national city skate events. Everyone I met at these events was super welcoming. I would ask them how long they had skated, and theyâd tell me somewhere between 5â"20+ years. I got better at skating by just approaching other skaters and asking them how they got over the shitty pavement weâd just passed or how they stopped so quickly going so fast. I made lifelong friends that I could couchsurf with. They shared what it was like to grow up in these cities and to struggle with issues like gentrification. Since skating was really big in the 2000s, these friends were older than me but still had so much well-timed relatable life advice. I was so inspired by this community of self-reliant, expressive individuals who come together despite huge differences in age, socioeconomic status, and cultural background, simply to skate. I saw people that were happy â" free from the pervasive feeling at MIT of not having done enough â" and still making a living. Skate Chicago, June Skate Boston, September Big Apple Roll (NYC), August Showing Myself that I Can For one of the first times in my life, I felt like I could get better at something. I skated for a total of 15 miles in Chicago, then 25 miles in Boston, then 50 miles in NYC. My endurance was increasing. From 15mph to 33mph, my speed record was climbing. I could do tricks that I couldnât before. Still, trying to learn some moves would almost end up with me breaking down in frustration. I would try over and over again not able to execute the move or make any progress. In those moments, I would forget that sometimes the skaters around me had years, sometimes decades, more time and experience to learn. I recognized that feeling; those moments felt just like being at MIT, surrounded by students with years of experience at X or Y and internalizing my lack of demonstrated ability as âIâm just not cut-out for X and Y. But when I saw those same skaters struggling to learn a new move or to unlearn a bad habit, it reminded me that we all are learning. It can be hard to feel like youâre making any progress at MIT. A lot of progress is about building confidence and increasing tolerance for challenge â" things that are hard to be proud of when they look like an almost-average on a test. But when I skate, there are still so many things that I can point to and say, âI couldnât do that, but now I can.â T stopping. One foot skating. Backwards skating. I feel myself getting better. More balanced. More confident. More capable. Showing Others that They Can Last year, I became certified to teach skating through the Skate Instructorâs Association (SkateIA) to help grow the community. In becoming an instructor, I realized that the responsibility of a teacher is about guiding those who can, but feel like they canât, towards realizing their own ability. The moment this came together for me was at a skate camp this past August, when an uncle brought his niece to me. They were about to go home because she was in tears, unable to do a move called the pivot. And I was nervous as a first-time instructor, nervous that Iâd be able to show her how to do it. But I remembered last year at this same camp, at least four different instructors explained and demoed this very same move to me, including a world-ranked slalom skater. I remembered how horrible it felt when everyone else had already moved on to the next move. How I felt like I was wasting everyoneâs time and asking for too much help. Similar to how Iâd felt asking friends for help on psets. And here this person was in front of me, avoiding eye contact and visibly deflated with no faith in herself whatsoever. Exactly how Iâd felt a year ago. I broke down the move into three steps. She tried, didnât get it, and seemed even more hopeless. We went back to the first step. I demoed just the first step. And she got it. I added the next step and she struggled a bit. But we worked together, trying different things and ways of explaining it. And she got it! She started looking cautiously confident and asked if we could add the next step. And when she got it, her face completely lit up. Sheâd felt it, one of the first moves in the slalom skating world. She didnât go home. In fact throughout the camp Iâd look over to check in on her and she was putting herself in the challenging groups. You could see the way she was pushing away the doubts and fears, drawing from an internally generated faith that wasnât there before. And thatâs what skating has given me that I want to give to others. Inspiring Each Other Mitchell Gu â18 and I started the MIT Inline Club this past year. As soon as it stops tempermental snowing in Boston, weâll be skating into the city, around the esplanade with Ashay Athalye â20, and teaching lessons again. And at some point after I graduate in June, I will skate across the U.S. Inspired by Yanise Ho, or Bladress, whoâs skating across the US right now on $0 and lots of love and trust. She shares stories of the families whoâve welcomed her in, of strangers â" now friends, who helped her continue on her way. And thereâs a whole international community of skaters. Sao Paolo, Tokyo, Shanghai, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin That Russian girl who every inline skater knows because at least four of their friends have sent them her viral video. Instagrammer @irane_surf who rocks a hijab and inline skates in Indonesia. Thundrblade, a Kyoto based startup, is launching their crowdsourcing for the first electric inline skate next week. Everywhere, people are redefining what it means to skate. Why I Skate For me, skating has been a way of challenging myself to connect with people so different from me, joined together by this community of people whoâve made it their own. As a lifestyle. As an extension of themselves. As a way to be a positive force in their community. As a method of sharing oneâs life experience with others. And as a way to make the world a better place. This is my first post as an admissions blogger and I chose to write about skating because of how much its helped me grow and thrive at MIT. My name is Caroline Mak, and its nice to meet you. Finally, a republican party were formed to challenge the democrats party. Since, then these two parties have managed to rule challenging each other in a different way. Political parties are the group of organization where their member is elected to hold the power in the government. Each of the candidate is chosen from their own political parties for the presidential election and whoever has the highest number of votes wins the election and runs for the president. Democratic and the Republican party are the only parties two win the presidential election from long time. They have lasted so long because of their remarkable abilities to change in the different periods of time. Particularly, during the crisis, both parties come along with reinventing new sources of support, new politics and new ideologies. These periods of party changes are described as party realignments. It is long lasting and produces fundamental changes in the parties affecting for years to come, their coalition, their governing philosophies and their chances of electoral success. In general, the aim of the political party is to elect their representative and carry out their partys policies in the long run. Interest groups are also known as pressure groups or lobbying groups. These are the groups where the members share a same goal and try to influence the government policy and their decision. The interest groups use various methods to achieve their desired common goal. One of the most important type is lobbying where different people, organization, private corporation, government officials and individuals engage themselves in influencing the governments plans and policies by sharing their interest as one. The interest groups also can support the candidates in an election by giving money, but it has to go through the PAC which stands for Political Action Committee. The maximum amount the PACs can contribute is $10,000 directly to the candidate. Resources and the incentives are the most important factors in creating an interest group. In general, there are two types of interest groups. They are Economic Group and a Noneconomic Group. Economic groups have built in resources and have great er access to the financial resources whereas Non-economic group are less organized and has a money problem. The United States has the greatest number of interest groups in the American politics. It is due to main structure of the United States political system. The largest type of interest groups represents the business firms like U.S. Chamber of Commerce which spends billions of dollars when it comes to lobbying. According to study.com, The interests groups do not want to operate the government and they do not put forward political candidates even though they support candidates who will promote their interest if elected or reelected. Interest groups are not like political parties who want to run and operate the government rather they want to influence the government by promoting a position on a specific area chosen by those individuals, organization, associations, officials. The area could be regarding the agriculture, gun control, business interest, environmental interest and so on. These interest groups have mainly two characteristics. They are pursuit of policy and the organized membe rship. In my point of view, political party has a greater influence on government policy. The main goal of the political party is to win the election and gain the control over the government by winning the election. They always have a duty to represent the people by providing different services health care, education, benefits and so on. The political parties in the United States are effectively well-organized. They fight for the benefit of the nation as a whole in a different way. These are the people who understand the issue of the nation and try to make the societies better and better every day by overcoming the problem that arises. These parties do not discriminate the citizens based on their religion, class, ages and so on. In fact, every individuals of the nation are united together and given equal opportunities to make the better government by electing the right candidate for the country through casting a vote.

5 Page Othello Research Paper Free Essays
A couple of months ago my parents hired a magician for my little brotherââ¬â¢s birthday party. Ivan the Incredible specialized in optical illusions with cards and coin tricks, which was a little hard for the group of eight year olds to grasp but most entertaining for myself and several adults. When I began reading Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Othello, Iagoââ¬â¢s antics reminded me of Ivan the Incredible and how someone can trick you to believe something is true when it really isnââ¬â¢t. We will write a custom essay sample on 5 Page Othello Research Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now Appearance versus reality plays a huge role in Othello, and constantly surfaces as a main theme in Iagoââ¬â¢s magnificent ability and experience in deceiving fellow characters causing an extra twist to the plot. Iago is the main manipulator of reality to change the appearance of a situation into something that benefits him. This is seen when Iago tricks Othello into believing Cassio and Othelloââ¬â¢s wife, Desdemona are having an affair. Iago tricks Roderigo into killing Casio through his manipulation of reality. Also, Iago thickens the lie by planting a gift from Othello to Desdemona in Cassioââ¬â¢s house and also pretends to have a conversation about Desdemona with Cassio while Othello look on but cannot hear. Which of course, are all actions needed to be taken for his master plan to work out correctly. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Othello tells the audience the story of a very successful General of Venice, Othello and how has was deceived by someone he believe to be an honest man, Iago, his ensign. The plot speeds up quickly Othello promotes Cassio instead of Iago. Iago vows revenge and slowly convinces Othello of Desdemonaââ¬â¢s infidelity with Cassio, the lieutenant to whom Othello had given the position Iago had sought. Iago also gets Roderigo to help him in his evil plan by telling him that he can have Desdemona if he helps get rid of Cassio. Oblivious to Iagoââ¬â¢s master plan Othello is ultimately a victim of his own naivete. It all starts when Iago plants a little seed of suspicion into Othelloââ¬â¢s mind about Desdemona. Iago states, I speak not yet of proof. Look to your wife; observe her well with Cassio; Wear your eye thus, not jealous nor secure: I would not have your free and noble nature, out of self-bounty, be abused; look toââ¬â¢t: I know our country disposition well; In Venice they do let heaven see the pranks they dare not show their husbands; their best conscience is not to leaveââ¬â¢t undone, but keepââ¬â¢t unknown. (III. iii. 196-204) For the rest of the play all of Othelloââ¬â¢s suspicions about innocent Desdemona are built upon this bug Iago has planted in Othelloââ¬â¢s ear. Eventually, Othello confronted Desdemona and Emilia (Desdemonaââ¬â¢s companion) about the situation Iago informed him of but it was already too late because his mind was already made up. However, he genuinely believe his ensign would never do such a thing, as he stated, ââ¬Å"I think thou dost; and, for I know thouââ¬â¢rt full of love and honestyâ⬠(III. iii. 117-118). Instead of Iago just coming to Othello and saying, ââ¬Å"Cassio is sleeping with Desdemona, â⬠he made it more believable by pretending he really didnââ¬â¢t want to tell Othello of his suspicions and acted as if he was trying to protect Othello from jealousy. Of course, Iagoââ¬â¢s actions only increased Othelloââ¬â¢s desire to know what Iago thought which worked perfectly for Iagoââ¬â¢s plan. Iago knows very well that trust and deceit go together in order for him to complete his master plan. So the whole time he plans Othelloââ¬â¢s downfall he is continually trying to get his undoubting trust. Slowly but surely he poisons peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts, creating ideas in their heads without implicating himself. Iago even says himself that the advice he gives is free and honest which makes people believe him even more! Another one of the main people Iago deceives is Roderigo. Throughout the play, Iago tells him that he hates Othello and that Roderigo should make some money so he could give gifts to Desdemona, who Roderigo admires from afar. Without even a second thought, Roderigo sells his land and uses all his savings to buy gifts for Desdemona. However, Iago is actually keeping the gifts that Roderigo plans to give Desdemona for himself. Eventually, Roderigo begins to catch on to the act and confronts Iago, but he falls right into Iagoââ¬â¢s trap again when he tells him that killing Cassio will help him win over Desdemona because Desdemona is falling more in love with Cassio. Roderigo is then led to his death by the hands of ââ¬Å"Honest Iagoâ⬠when he draws his sword hoping to kill Roderigo while Roderigo is fighting Cassio. The next incident which furthers Iagoââ¬â¢s plan is when Othello sees Cassio walking away very quickly after conversing with Desdemona. To make sure Othello does not get suspicious, Iago whispers, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I cannot think it, that he would steal away so guilty like. â⬠(lll,iii,42) Othello then replies, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I do believe ââ¬Ëtwas he. â⬠(lll,iii,44) Othello believes what he sees to be the truth even though he didnââ¬â¢t hear what was said. This instance is only the beginning of the lies that he sees from afar. However, Iago does not stop there because he cannot predict every time the two will meet. Therefore, he decides to manipulate Othelloââ¬â¢s feelings for Desdemona again. There are a few people who know of the handkerchief Othello gave to Desdemona when they began courting. In fact, Cassio was there when she received it and Desdemona promised to never leave it out of her sight. But, that all changed when Othello yelled at her the first time and she dropped it. Emilia, (her companion and Iagoââ¬â¢s wife) picked it up and brought it to her husband which only furthered Iagoââ¬â¢s horrible scheme and little does she know, ââ¬Å"Emilia is just another pawn in his gameâ⬠(Polymath). ââ¬Å"Iagoââ¬â¢s deception depends on the image of the handkerchief in Cassioââ¬â¢s hand, and he achieves this image not only through description, but by directing the actions of Cassio and Bianca by showing that the handkerchief is no longer in Desdemonaââ¬â¢s possessionâ⬠(Smith 33). Once Iago had the handkerchief in his possession he planted it in Cassioââ¬â¢s home hoping Othello would find it or Cassio would use it in front of Othello. Iago tells Othello he will start a conversation with Cassio about Desdemona and all the proof he will need shall be there. Iago places Othello where he can see but cannot hear. Iago then starts a conversation with Cassio about Bianca. However, it appears to Othello that Cassio is talking in a sexual way about Desdemona. In reality, Iago places Cassio in a position to talk about how he really feels about Bianca. Othello sees this from afar and says in shock, ââ¬Å"Crying, ââ¬ËO dear Cassio,ââ¬â¢ as it were, his gesture imports it. (lll,i,155) Othello believes the appearance of the conversation, which for him is all the evidence he needs. Now, since Othello trusts Iago, he believes everything Iago says to him and trusts his opinions, even though they are in reality, lies. Iago supports everything he has led Othello to believe and never wavers from his thoughts or offers the benefit of the doubt because he doesnââ¬â¢t want to make Othello doubt him especially after he gained his trust. ââ¬Å"Because he wants material proof, he equates love with a handkerchief which in its very aterial certainty is most subject to chance. Thus the plot ironically emphasizes that his desire for certainty renders him most subject to chance, operating on the most trivial levels, as well as to Iagoââ¬â¢s malevolent manipulation of itâ⬠(Stockholder 256). In the end, Othello kills Desdemona because he couldnââ¬â¢t take the thought of her being with another man and lying to him when she was really truthful. Then Emilia tells Othello the truth behind the handkerchief and how her husband, Iago is evil before she is killed by Iago. Roderigo also dies from his wounds inflicted while fighting Cassio and unknowingly fighting Iago. Othello then kills himself when the realities of all those appearances are brought to the light. Appearance versus reality is a recurring theme throughout the play. By jumping to conclusions and not getting both sides of the story Othello and Roderigo fall to their own demise. If they would have for one second thought, ââ¬Å"Honest Iagoâ⬠to not be entirely honest the events of the play surely would have been different. How to cite 5 Page Othello Research Paper, Essays
